LikeDislikeThe M Street Bridge, built in 1911 was seen as inadequate in a time of war, and needed to be replaced. The plan for a vertical lift bridge was developed in a conference held in 1933, construction began in 1934, and the bridge was dedicated by the Governor in 1935. In 1936, the American Institute of Steel Construction recognized it as “The Most Beautiful Bridge.”
The architect was Alfred Eichler, who worked for the state’s Division of Architecture and also designed state buildings. I assume he’s related to builders known locally and in the Bay Area for their modern home designs.
